In the past year, the Hawks' Band has been dwindling since Guts went on his quest to find his destiny. Guts, unaware of the Hawks' fate, returns after a rumor is passed to him about their new leader Casca. The Band of the Hawk, once the protectors of the Kingdom of Midland, are being hunted while they fight desperately for their life and plot to release their leader Griffith after he has been imprisoned due to treason. The man they rescue is not the Griffith that they know.

Griffith has become a shell after an entire year of horrific, continuous torture. He is no longer able walk or speak. Nor can he hold a blade.
